About the project

The Unyenge to Universal Energy Road to the Ibom Deep Seaport is a 13.6-kilometre dual carriageway in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. It is also known as the Orukim-Unyenge Universal Energy Road. It runs from Unyenge past the Universal Energy site towards Ibaka, and is the main access route to the planned Ibom Deep Seaport. The scope includes two bridges, one of 30 metres and one of 45 metres, and a spur road to Affi-Uda village.

The road is being built by the Akwa Ibom State Government under the ARISE Agenda of Governor Pastor Umo Eno. It was flagged off in February 2024 during the Governor's tour of the Oron Federal Constituency. Work is ongoing. The swampy, waterlogged ground has slowed progress. By July 2025, site clearance was complete, drainage was about half done and earthworks were close to 40 percent done.

The road is meant to open up the Ibaka coast for the seaport and related industry, and to give Affi-Uda and other Mbo communities a good road to markets, schools and health centres.

It is expected to speed up the movement of goods, cut transport costs and draw investment to Mbo.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

The spur is meant to bring Affi-Uda village onto the main road. When the work is finished, coastal communities on this axis should have an easier trip to the rest of the LGA.

For work and income

The road is meant to carry traffic to the planned seaport area. Mbo's economy rests on fishing, farming and maritime trade, and a dual road on this axis can help move fish, crayfish and other goods inland. The work is still ongoing.
