About the project
The Ibom Sports Academy is a school of sport being built in Eket Local Government Area. It will combine sports training with formal education, with an admission plan of 60 per cent sport and 40 per cent education.
The Akwa Ibom State Government approved the academy as part of Governor Pastor Umo Eno's plan for sports development. Work began with the perimeter fence and the gatehouse, and construction is ongoing. The Governor also spoke of the coming academy at the Eket Federal Constituency town hall meeting in August 2025.
The Commissioner for Sports, Paul Bassey, has said the academy will start with selected sports in which Akwa Ibom has shown strength. The wider plan covers athletes, coaches, schools, clubs, sports medicine, physiotherapy, analytics, player management, sponsorship and broadcasting.
The academy is expected to become a centre for finding and training young talent, and to create jobs for coaches and support staff. It fits the ARISE Agenda aim of using sport to build skills and opportunity for young people.
