About the project

This record covers the building of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses for Akwa Ibom State at a factory in Turkey. The buses are Citiport 12 CNG low-floor city buses made by Anadolu Isuzu. The state ordered 50 of them for a new public transport service meant to link all 31 Local Government Areas.

The buses are paid for by the Akwa Ibom State Government under Governor Umo Eno. N42.04 billion was set aside for the project across the 2025 and 2026 budgets. Payment to the maker was made in October 2025 and production began in January 2026. On 26 January 2026 the Governor flagged off work on the Ibom CNG City Bus Terminal at Obio Offot and Ikot Akpe in Uyo, on 62,000 square metres of land. The first batch of 20 buses arrived and was received by the Governor around 30 June 2026. The remaining 30 were to follow.

The order includes spare parts for years of upkeep. The terminal is planned with cashless bus card ticketing and a training college for engineers, mechanics and drivers. The next phase is to finish the terminal, fit the buses with tracking devices and start the ticketing system.

The buses are expected to give people cheaper, cleaner and safer transport, and to cut fuel costs by running on gas. The project fits the ARISE Agenda and the federal push to move public transport to CNG.
